The big dig
- In 2004 a storm led to lots of landslides and they closed the roads for 75 days.
- But this latest slip was something else and work started straight away.
- Diggers were used to dump rocks in big trucks but as they worked more rock and earth slid down.
- The road couldn’t be reopened until the hillside was hard enough.
- The team cut down trees and bushes to reach the top of the slip.
- It was time to bring in the bandit. The bandit is a grunty bulldozer whose scoop had been replaced with a winch and heavy duty cables. Heavy diggers were then lowered down the very slippery slip while the bandit held them in place with its mighty cables.
- A 20 tonne digger scooped up great scoops of rock and earth.
- The Manawatu gorge road was reopened to all traffic in September.
