The Big Dig

The big dig
  1. In 2004  a storm led to lots of landslides and they closed the roads for 75 days.

  1. But this latest slip was something else and work started straight away.

  1. Diggers were used to dump rocks in big trucks but as they worked more rock and earth slid down.

  1. The road couldn’t be reopened until the hillside was hard enough.

  1. The team cut down trees and bushes to reach the top of the slip.

  1. It was time to bring in the bandit. The bandit is a grunty bulldozer whose scoop had been replaced with a winch and heavy duty cables. Heavy diggers were then lowered down the very slippery slip while the bandit held them in place with its mighty cables.

  1. A 20 tonne digger  scooped up great scoops of rock and earth.

  1. The Manawatu gorge road was reopened to all  traffic in September.
